Chapter 8 - The Confession

Helena Vale’s voice was dangerously calm as she ordered me to step away from the empty safe.
I slowly raised my hands and turned around to face the true monster of the family.
She was wearing a silk robe and holding a polished silver revolver with a surprisingly steady hand.
She laughed maliciously, explaining that she had emptied the safe hours ago in preparation for Clara’s tragic cremation.
Helena proudly admitted that she had poisoned her own husband three years ago to seize control of his company.
She monologued about how easy it was to bribe Dr. Crane to fake medical records and convince Clara she had a weak heart.
She told me she was going to shoot me right now, place a stolen knife in my hand, and claim she killed a deranged intruder.
I kept my hands raised, silently reaching my finger toward the smartwatch hidden under the sleeve of my jacket.
I had dialed the emergency contact number of a high-ranking FBI agent I knew from my mechanic days, and the call had successfully connected.
Every single word of Helena’s horrific, detailed confession was currently being broadcast directly to federal authorities.
I asked her if she felt any remorse for trying to burn her own pregnant daughter alive.
Helena spat on the expensive rug and declared that Clara was nothing more than a pathetic obstacle standing in the way of true power.
I knew the FBI had enough evidence, so I intentionally stumbled backward, pretending to trip over the heavy Persian rug.
As Helena instinctively lowered the gun to track my fall, I kicked a heavy crystal decanter directly into her shin.
She screamed in pain, dropping the revolver as it clattered across the hardwood floor.
I dove forward and pinned her to the ground, easily securing her arms behind her back with a leather belt.
I stood up to retrieve the dropped weapon, feeling a massive surge of triumph.

Just as my fingers touched the silver handle of the gun, the heavy wooden doors of the study burst open.
Marcus marched into the room holding a terrified, bruised FBI agent by the collar, pressing a tactical knife against his throat.
