Chapter 6 - The Delivery

The terrifying reality of our situation crashed down upon me in the dark, freezing tunnel.
We were miles away from any legitimate medical facility, trapped underground while armed killers hunted us above.
Elias quickly evaluated the situation and pointed his flashlight down an adjoining brick corridor.
He led us into an abandoned subway maintenance room that offered a small sliver of dry concrete floor.
I stripped off my heavy winter coat and laid it down to create a makeshift bed for my suffering wife.
Elias sterilized his hands using a bottle of high-grade rubbing alcohol he had salvaged from his medical bag.
Clara gripped my hand so tightly that I felt my bones grinding together with every massive contraction.
She screamed through the agonizing pain, her voice bouncing off the hollow walls of the forgotten subway line.
Elias calmly coached her through the breathing, using his military trauma experience to keep the absolute panic at bay.
After thirty grueling minutes of sheer terror, a tiny, fragile baby boy slipped into Elias’s waiting hands.
The entire tunnel went completely silent.
The baby was blue, completely motionless, and not making a single sound.
Elias immediately began rubbing the infant's tiny chest, using two fingers to perform delicate, desperate CPR.
I held my breath, tears streaming down my face as I begged the universe not to let my son die in the dark.
Suddenly, a sharp, piercing cry erupted from the baby’s lungs, instantly bringing the tunnel back to life.
Clara collapsed against my chest, sobbing with absolute joy as Elias wrapped our beautiful son in a clean thermal blanket.
We finally had a moment of pure, undeniable victory against the darkness.

Then, the bright beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the darkness and hit me right in the eyes.
A cold, mechanical voice echoed down the corridor, simply stating, "Target acquired."
