Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

I held my breath completely, raising the heavy antique rifle and aiming it directly at the dark doorway with my finger resting gently on the trigger.
I patiently waited in the pitch-black darkness for a wooden floorboard to squeak, needing to know exactly where the intruder was standing before taking my only shot.
When I finally heard the distinct, heavy crunch of a boot stepping onto a loose board right in front of me, I pulled the trigger with all my might.
The old rifle fired with a massive, deafening blast, brilliantly illuminating the small cabin with a bright flash of orange fire for a split second.
However, the powerful bullet completely missed its target, fiercely striking an old hanging mirror and aggressively shattering glass violently across the entire room.
Valerie suddenly laughed maniacally from the completely opposite corner of the room, loudly mocking my desperate, failed attempt to defend my family.
She abruptly clicked on a blindingly bright tactical flashlight, aiming the intense beam directly into my eyes to temporarily blind me.
Taking advantage of my confusion, she stepped forward and viciously kicked the heavy rifle out of my hands, sending it sliding uselessly across the floor.
She then pointed her sleek, black handgun directly at little Sophie's head, aggressively demanding that we hand over the memory card she thought we still had.
Before Valerie could pull the deadly trigger, Vanessa suddenly charged aggressively out from the deep shadows, screaming fiercely as she tackled her twin sister.

The immense, sudden force of the heavy collision sent both women tumbling violently backward toward the open, dark trapdoor in the floor.
With a horrifying combination of screams, both Vanessa and Valerie fell violently down into the deep, pitch-black depths of the cabin's underground root cellar.
