Chapter 6 - The Sniper

I aggressively threw myself onto the dusty wooden floorboards just a fraction of a second before a loud, high-velocity bullet completely shattered the window glass.

Without wasting a moment, I grabbed Vanessa and Sophie by their arms and frantically dragged them behind the heavy, thick iron stove for cover.

It was immediately obvious that Valerie had somehow miraculously survived the fiery explosion, and she had tracked us into the woods with a serious weapon.

Another deafening gunshot rang out loudly through the silent forest, aggressively splintering the wooden floorboards mere inches away from my foot.

I suddenly realized with terrifying clarity that Valerie must be using thermal night vision equipment, allowing her to easily track our body heat through the thin walls.

Crawling quietly on my hands and knees, I made my way to the rusted fuse box and completely ripped out the main electrical wires to plunge the cabin into absolute darkness.

I frantically searched the dark room and managed to grab an old, heavy hunting rifle from a shattered display case mounted on the back wall.

My hands shook violently as I checked the rusted chamber, discovering there was only one single, old bullet left inside the antique weapon.

The heavy front door of the cabin suddenly creaked open with a haunting, slow groan, letting the freezing, bitter night wind rush into the room.

Heavy, deliberate footsteps began to echo loudly in the absolute darkness, slowly and methodically moving directly toward our hiding spot behind the stove.
