Chapter 3 - The Inferno

The master bedroom was quickly filling up with thick, toxic black smoke that made it almost impossible to see or breathe properly.

Sophie began to cough violently, clutching her small hands tightly around her chest as she struggled to pull oxygen into her burning lungs.

I knew that waiting for the fire department was not an option, as the blazing heat from the hallway was already blistering the paint on our bedroom door.

Grabbing a heavy wooden vanity chair from the corner of the room, I swung it with maximum force directly into the large glass window.

The thick pane shattered instantly, sending a chaotic shower of sparkling glass shards falling down onto the green grass of the front lawn below.

We were trapped on the second floor of the house, and jumping from this dangerous height would easily break a young child's fragile bones.

Thinking rapidly, I sprinted over to the large bed and aggressively ripped the heavy cotton bedsheets away from the expensive mattress.

I quickly tied the long sheets together using tight, secure knots, creating a sturdy makeshift rope that I firmly anchored to the heavy oak bedpost.

"You have to go first, baby," I told Sophie, picking her up gently and helping her carefully climb out onto the narrow window ledge.

She held onto the tied sheets tightly with her small hands, bravely sliding down the side of the burning house until her feet safely touched the ground.

Next, I helped my exhausted, traumatized wife climb out the window, watching anxiously as she slowly descended the makeshift rope despite her severe physical weakness.

The blazing fire finally burned completely through the bedroom door, sending a massive, roaring wave of orange flames directly into the room.

I took one final, deep breath of somewhat clean air and prepared to swing my legs over the shattered, jagged window frame.

Suddenly, a powerful hand reached out from the thick, blinding smoke and grabbed the back of my shirt with terrifying, unexpected strength.

I was violently yanked backward, landing hard on my back against the scorching, ash-covered bedroom floorboards.

Standing directly over me was Valerie, completely ignoring the raging fire as she stared down at me through the lenses of a heavy military gas mask.

Her eyes were completely devoid of any human emotion, glowing eerily in the reflection of the aggressively burning room around us.

Before I could even attempt to fight back or scramble away, she aggressively plunged a long, thick medical syringe directly into the side of my neck.
