Chapter 2 - The Memory Card

I frantically turned the brass doorknob, but the heavy bedroom door would not budge an inch, trapping the three of us together in the enclosed space.

Realizing we were locked in, I immediately rushed back to the closet and began tearing away massive chunks of drywall with my bare, bleeding hands.

It took several agonizing minutes of heavy labor, but I finally managed to create a hole large enough to pull the trapped woman out of the dark void.

She collapsed weakly onto the plush bedroom carpet, violently coughing up dust as I carefully used a pocket knife to cut the tight zip ties from her wrists.

I gently peeled the thick duct tape off her mouth, revealing severely cracked lips and pale skin that had not seen sunlight in months.

"David," she whispered in a raspy, broken voice, tears streaming down her dirty cheeks as she looked into my eyes with genuine, desperate love.

The immense warmth and absolute familiarity in her voice instantly confirmed my worst nightmare; this broken, starving woman was my real wife.

While I held Vanessa tightly against my chest, Sophie quietly crawled over to her discarded electronic tablet and carefully inserted the hidden memory card.

The bright screen flickered to life immediately, pulling up a deeply disturbing security video that had been secretly recorded in our own kitchen six months ago.

The silent footage clearly showed the real Vanessa standing at the kitchen counter, casually drinking a glass of water after coming home from a long run.

Suddenly, a woman looking exactly like her stepped quietly out of the pantry, holding a damp chemical rag in her gloved hands.

The impostor grabbed Vanessa from behind with shocking, ruthless strength, pressing the suffocating rag firmly over her mouth until she went completely limp.

"Who is she?" I asked, my voice trembling uncontrollably as I stared at the horrifying proof of the day my wife was secretly replaced.

Vanessa took a deep, painful breath and leaned heavily against the wooden bedframe, her frail body shaking with an intense mixture of fear and exhaustion.

"Her name is Valerie," she confessed quietly, wiping a tear from her eye as she looked down at the floor in profound shame.

"She is my identical twin sister, but she was born with severe psychological issues and was permanently locked away in a psychiatric facility when we were teenagers."

Vanessa explained that Valerie had always been violently jealous of her normal life and must have finally escaped the secure hospital to steal her identity.

The terrifying reality of the situation fully crashed over me; a highly dangerous, escaped mental patient had been raising my young daughter.

Before I could ask Vanessa how Valerie had managed to perfectly replicate her voice and habits, an incredibly strange, chemical scent filled the room.

I looked down near the baseboard and noticed thick, suffocating black smoke beginning to pour rapidly underneath the crack of the locked bedroom door.

The heavy, toxic fumes aggressively burned my throat and made my eyes water instantly, signaling that the house was burning at an incredibly fast rate.

Valerie had deliberately set our beautiful home on fire, planning to burn us alive and completely erase all evidence of her horrific crimes.
