Chapter 4 - The Paralyzing Agent

My vision immediately began to blur in heavy waves as a cold, terrifying numbness rapidly spread through the veins in my neck and shoulders.

Valerie leaned in incredibly close, completely ignoring the roaring flames that were now violently consuming the expensive curtains just a few feet away.

She removed her heavy gas mask for a brief second, revealing a deeply psychotic, twisted smile that perfectly mirrored my wife's beautiful face.

"I am never going back to that hospital, David," she whispered directly into my ear, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated malice.

"I am going to take over this perfect little life completely, and you are going to die up here like a tragic, helpless victim."

I fought against the heavy, suffocating paralysis aggressively creeping into my limbs, summoning absolutely every last ounce of adrenaline my body had left.

Using my remaining strength, I kicked my heavy work boot squarely into her knee, causing it to buckle backward with a sickening, loud pop.

Valerie screamed in sudden, extreme agony, stumbling backward and completely tripping over the shattered, jagged wooden window frame.

She aggressively dropped her protective gas mask onto the floor, immediately gasping and choking on the thick, toxic black smoke filling the room.

Knowing this was my absolutely only chance, I rolled my heavy, unresponsive body directly out of the open window, desperately grabbing onto the sheet rope.

My hands were far too numb to properly grip the fabric, causing me to slide violently and uncontrollably down the side of the brick house.

I hit the front lawn incredibly hard, the heavy impact knocking the wind out of my lungs and leaving me barely able to move my lower legs.

Vanessa and Sophie immediately rushed to my side, grabbing me by my shoulders and dragging my heavy body away from the burning structure.

We reached the safety of the dark, wooded area across the street just as a massive, fiery explosion completely rocked the second floor of the house.

The violent blast showered the entire neighborhood in bright orange sparks, thoroughly collapsing the roof directly into the master bedroom.

Vanessa held my hand tightly, tears of immense relief streaming down her face as we watched the fiery destruction of the place we once called home.

We firmly assumed Valerie had been completely trapped and instantly killed in the massive, catastrophic blast that destroyed the upper floor.

However, as I weakly turned my head to look deeper into the surrounding forest, my blood ran completely cold with fresh terror.

A tall, dark figure was standing perfectly still among the tall pine trees, silently and intensely watching us from the deep shadows.
