Chapter 4 - The Assassin's Mistake

The masked man stepped closer until the cold steel of the shotgun pressed against her forehead.
Abigail looked up into his dark eyes without a single trace of fear.
She had already survived a betrayal worse than death.
The hitman reached into her coat pocket to steal her wallet and confirm her identity.
His fingers brushed against the lottery ticket hidden in her clothing.
He pulled the ticket out and glanced at the printed numbers.
The assassin froze completely as he recognized the winning combination from the evening news.
He slowly lowered his weapon and stared at Abigail in disbelief.
He asked her if the ticket was real.
Abigail saw a desperate opportunity to save her own life.
She lied smoothly and claimed the ticket was already validated.
She told him she was worth twenty million dollars and Spencer was only paying him a fraction of a fraction.
The hitman pulled off his mask to reveal a scarred and weary face.
He introduced himself as Cole and admitted Spencer was only paying him ten thousand dollars.
Abigail offered him one million dollars in cash to switch sides and protect her.
Cole thought about the offer for a few agonizing seconds.
He tucked the shotgun away and helped her up from the glass covered floor.
He agreed to the deal but warned her that Spencer had eyes everywhere in the city.
They sneaked out through the back alley just as the police arrived at the front of the pharmacy.
Cole drove them to a secluded safehouse in the industrial district.
He handed Abigail a burner phone so she could contact Naomi.
Abigail dialed the number Naomi had given her earlier.
The phone rang three times before someone finally answered.
But it was not Naomi's voice on the other end of the line.

It was Spencer laughing coldly into the receiver.
He thanked Abigail for sending his runaway wife right back into his trap.
