Chapter 4 - The Electrical Surge

The impact of the falling steel cage shook the entire concrete floor and sent a cloud of thick dust into the stagnant air.

I grabbed the heavy iron bars and pulled with all my strength, but the reinforced metal did not budge a single millimeter.

Vanessa slowly walked out from a glass-walled manager's office on the second floor, looking down at me with an expression of pure amusement.

She was wearing an elegant, designer evening gown that looked entirely out of place in the dirty, abandoned industrial warehouse.

"You always were incredibly predictable, Daniel," she taunted, slowly descending the metal staircase with a glass of champagne in her hand.

I demanded to know why she was doing this to the man she had promised to marry in just three weeks.

She laughed coldly, explaining that she had never loved me, and our entire relationship was a meticulously calculated financial acquisition.

She revealed that she had been working with a shadowy partner for over a year to drain the Whitmore family trust completely dry.

They needed Maria dead and Noah kidnapped because the boy's biological existence legally blocked the final transfer of the estate funds.

I gripped the bars tightly and asked her how she could justify destroying the life of an innocent, terrified child.

Vanessa smiled wickedly and told me she wasn't going to destroy him; she was simply going to sell him to an overseas buyer.

My blood boiled with a blinding, uncontrollable rage, completely replacing the fear that had been paralyzing my mind.

I noticed a thick, exposed electrical cable running directly along the concrete floor just inches outside my steel cage.

As Vanessa stepped closer to gloat, I quickly raised my silenced pistol and fired a single round directly into the high-voltage cable.

A massive explosion of blue sparks and violent electricity erupted across the wet concrete floor, instantly plunging the warehouse into total darkness.

The electrical surge violently short-circuited the magnetic locks controlling the heavy steel cage trapping me.

I kicked the cage door open with tremendous force and sprinted blindly toward the center of the room to grab Noah.

I scooped the terrified, crying boy into my arms and promised him that nobody would ever hurt him again.

Gunfire erupted from the darkness as Vanessa's panicked mercenaries fired wildly into the pitch-black warehouse.

I dodged behind a row of steel shipping containers, using the heavy metal walls to shield the boy from the deadly hail of bullets.

I desperately searched the shadows for an exit, knowing we could not survive a prolonged firefight against heavily armed professionals.

Suddenly, the massive rolling garage door at the back of the warehouse violently exploded inward with a deafening, metallic crash.

A heavily armored black SUV tore through the smoke and debris, screeching to a halt directly in front of our hiding spot.

The passenger door flew open, and a man stepped out wearing a tactical vest and holding a military-grade assault rifle.

The emergency lights flickered back on, illuminating the face of the man who had just saved my life.

It was my deceased brother, Andrew, and he was pointing his weapon directly at my chest.
