Chapter 13 - The Buried Truth

I stormed out of the federal penitentiary with Maria right by my side, the blistering desert heat matching the absolute, burning fury in my chest.
If Alejandro was coming for my son, we could not simply hide on the beach and wait for a tactical strike. We needed undeniable leverage. We needed the original blackmail files my father had kept to protect himself from the cartel, documents that Andrew had desperately searched for but failed to find.
I told Maria to reroute our armored SUV toward the Hollywood Hills. My father had owned a sprawling, secretive estate completely disconnected from the primary Whitmore trust. It had sat entirely abandoned since his death, wrapped in complex legal red tape to prevent federal audits.
We arrived at the rusted iron gates of the decaying mansion just as the sun began to dip below the Los Angeles skyline. The massive stone house was covered in overgrown ivy, casting long, sinister shadows across the cracked cobblestone driveway.
Maria drew her federal sidearm, clearing the dusty, silent rooms with precise, tactical efficiency as we moved deeper into the dark estate. The air smelled of old paper, damp wood, and long-forgotten secrets.
I navigated through the labyrinth of hallways until we reached my father’s private subterranean study. The walls were lined with rotting books and covered in thick, undisturbed dust. I walked directly toward a massive portrait of my grandfather hanging above the cold stone fireplace.
I reached behind the heavy wooden frame and felt a familiar, hidden mechanical lever. I pulled it down, and the entire fireplace groaned, sliding slowly to the left to reveal a state-of-the-art, titanium wall safe.
My father had forced me to memorize the biometric override code when I was a teenager, a paranoid contingency plan he claimed was for national emergencies. I typed the complex sequence into the digital keypad. The safe hissed, depressurizing as the heavy metal door popped open.
Inside sat a stack of encrypted hard drives and a single, pristine leather folder.
I opened the folder with trembling hands. Inside were the original, unaltered medical records from the night of the crash, confirming Rachel’s murder and bearing the tiny, ink-stained footprints of a newborn boy. Beside the footprints was a birth certificate listing me as the biological father.
It was the absolute, undeniable proof of my bloodline.
Suddenly, a red laser sight swept across the dusty floor of the study, illuminating the leather folder in my hands.

"Drop the documents, Mr. Whitmore," a deep, heavily accented voice ordered from the doorway.
I looked up to see three heavily armed cartel mercenaries blocking the only exit to the subterranean study. Alejandro had anticipated our desperate search for the truth, and he had sent an elite hit squad to ensure we never left the abandoned mansion alive.
