Chapter 17 - The Extraction

The reinforced concrete ceiling of the underground bunker shook violently as high-explosive breaching charges detonated on the surface level. Dust and debris rained down on us as the facility's emergency red lights began flashing intensely, plunging the bunker into a terrifying, strobe-lit nightmare.
Maria pulled a pair of advanced night-vision goggles over her eyes and handed me a secondary set. She instructed me to keep Noah entirely shielded behind the heavy steel server racks in the communication room while she defended the primary choke point at the bottom of the entrance stairwell.
A massive, deafening explosion ripped the heavy steel blast doors completely off their titanium hinges.
Dozens of elite cartel mercenaries poured down the concrete stairs, their tactical flashlights cutting sharply through the dense, choking smoke. Maria unleashed a devastating, precise volley of automatic gunfire, instantly dropping the first wave of attackers and forcing the others to scramble for cover.
The deafening roar of the firefight was absolutely terrifying in the enclosed underground space. I held Noah tightly against my chest, covering his small ears with my hands to protect him from the concussive blasts of the high-caliber weapons.
"Daniel, the secondary escape tunnel!" Maria shouted over the deafening noise, ejecting a spent magazine and slamming a new one home. "Take the boy and go now! I will hold them here!"
I absolutely refused to leave her behind to face a heavily armed army alone. I raised my assault rifle, stepping out from behind the server racks to provide aggressive covering fire. I pulled the trigger, feeling the powerful recoil punch my shoulder as my bullets forced the mercenaries to duck back into the smoke.
"Move!" I roared at Maria, grabbing her tactical vest and pulling her forcefully toward the hidden emergency blast hatch at the rear of the bunker.
We scrambled into the narrow, dark escape tunnel just as the mercenaries threw highly volatile flashbang grenades into the main room. The blinding white light and deafening explosion masked our rapid retreat through the damp, claustrophobic passage.
We ran for nearly a mile in total darkness until we reached a rusted iron grate leading out to a dry, rocky canyon floor. I kicked the grate open with all my strength, and we pulled ourselves out into the freezing desert air.
About fifty yards away, a sleek, heavily armored federal extraction helicopter was idling quietly in the shadows, its massive rotors spinning flawlessly. The junior agent from the bunker had called in emergency backup before the communications were severed.
We sprinted across the rocky terrain, the sharp stones cutting into our boots. Suddenly, a sniper bullet ricocheted off a boulder just inches from Maria’s head. Alejandro’s men had completely surrounded the canyon.

Federal agents on the helicopter immediately opened fire with heavy mounted machine guns, laying down a devastating curtain of suppressive fire that completely shredded the ridgeline.
I threw Noah into the open door of the hovering aircraft, jumping in directly behind him. Maria dove into the cabin just as the helicopter violently banked into the night sky, leaving the burning, ruined bunker and the furious cartel mercenaries far below us in the dark desert.
