Chapter 2 - The Assassin's Mistake

The cold steel of the gun barrel sent a terrifying shiver directly down my spine.

I slowly raised my hands into the air, my mind racing to find a way out of this deadly trap.

The man holding the weapon chuckled darkly, his heavy breath smelling strongly of cheap tobacco and stale coffee.

He told me Vanessa sent her absolute best regards, and that it was a tragedy I would not live to see my own wedding day.

I realized in that split second that my fiancée had already planned to frame my murder as a random robbery gone wrong in a bad neighborhood.

But this hired assassin had made a critical mistake by standing far too close to the kitchen island.

I dropped my left hand with lightning speed and grabbed a heavy cast-iron skillet resting on the stove.

I swung the skillet backward with every ounce of strength I possessed in my upper body.

The heavy iron connected squarely with the side of the assassin's head, emitting a sickening crunch that echoed in the small room.

He staggered backward, dropping his silenced pistol to the floor as he desperately clutched his bleeding temple.

I did not hesitate for a single moment, diving toward the discarded weapon and kicking it safely out of his reach.

I scrambled to my feet and delivered a punishing blow to his jaw, knocking the massive man completely unconscious on the kitchen floor.

My chest heaved violently as I stared at the neutralized threat, realizing my entire privileged life had just become a violent nightmare.

I quickly searched his dark jacket pockets and found a set of tactical zip-ties, which I used to securely bind his wrists and ankles.

Inside his inner pocket, I discovered a prepaid burner phone and a small, crumpled piece of paper containing a handwritten address.

The address pointed to an abandoned shipping warehouse located deep within the industrial district of the Long Beach port.

I immediately knew that this desolate location was exactly where Vanessa had taken Maria's terrified young son.

I grabbed the assassin's silenced pistol, feeling the unfamiliar, heavy weight of the deadly weapon in my shaking hands.

I rushed out of the ruined apartment and sprinted back to my car, constantly checking the shadows for any more hidden threats.

I started the engine and tore out of the parking lot, my tires screaming against the cold asphalt.

I reached into my pocket to call the chief of police, a man who had attended my family's private dinners for over a decade.

The line clicked open, but before I could speak, the police chief told me my car's GPS was currently being tracked by federal agents.

He coldly informed me that Vanessa had just filed a police report claiming I had brutally attacked Maria and fled the scene in a drunken rage.

"We have a warrant for your immediate arrest, Daniel, so turn yourself in before my officers shoot you on sight," the chief ordered ruthlessly.

I threw my expensive phone out the moving car window and watched it shatter into a hundred pieces on the highway.

I was completely alone, utterly framed, and driving directly toward a heavily guarded stronghold.
