Chapter 5 - The Shadow of the Past

My father stared at the glowing x-ray scans in absolute horror.

He realized his own mother had been slowly trying to murder his only child.

He asked Doctor Mercer why she would do something so unbelievably evil.

I sat on the exam table, shivering as the adrenaline finally wore off.

The police officer returned and said Grandma had already posted bail through a highly expensive lawyer.

She was back on the streets, and she still technically held my legal custody papers.

Dad grabbed my coat and said we were going into hiding immediately.

We drove for three hours into the dark countryside until we reached an old, abandoned hunting cabin.

It belonged to one of Dad's coworkers and was completely off the grid.

We locked the heavy wooden doors and nailed thick blankets over all the windows.

Dad sat by the fireplace, holding a heavy iron poker as a makeshift weapon.

He finally confessed to me that my mother did not die in a car crash.

She had been poisoned slowly over several months, exhibiting the exact same symptoms I had started feeling recently.

Dad said he signed the custody papers because Grandma convinced him he was losing his mind from grief.

Suddenly, the front doorknob began to rattle violently in the dark.

A loud, metallic click echoed through the silent cabin as the heavy deadbolt unlocked from the outside.
