Chapter 3 - The Poisoned Coffee

I held the small black device in my trembling hand.

Grandma had been listening to every single word I ever said to my father.

She knew every time I cried in my room and every time I tried to ask for help.

The flashing red lights of police cruisers suddenly illuminated the frosted glass of the clinic door.

Two armed officers rushed into the room, demanding to know who had called them.

Doctor Mercer immediately pointed at Grandma and accused her of severe child endangerment.

Grandma burst into fake, hysterical tears the moment the officers looked at her.

She claimed my father was a violent alcoholic and she was only trying to protect her disabled granddaughter.

One of the officers asked Dad to step outside to take a breathalyzer test.

Dad agreed immediately, knowing he had not touched a drop of alcohol in over five years.

While they were distracted, Grandma walked over to the coffee machine in the corner of the room.

She poured a cup of black coffee and quietly dropped a small white pill into the steaming liquid.

She brought the cup over to me and whispered that I needed to drink it to calm my nerves.

I shook my head and pushed the hot paper cup away.

Grandma leaned in close so no one else could hear her cold voice.

She said if I did not drink it, she would tell the police what really happened to my mother.
