Chapter 2 - The Silent Alarm

Dad blocked the clinic doorway with his broad shoulders.
He refused to let her take me anywhere.
Grandma reminded him that standing in her way was a federal offense against a legal guardian.
Doctor Mercer picked up the office telephone and dialed the police.
He stated loudly that a child was in immediate medical danger and required an emergency hold.
The receptionist locked the front door of the clinic, trapping us all inside the small waiting room.
Grandma finally let go of my wrist, but her sharp fingernails left deep red crescent marks on my skin.
She sat back down in the waiting chair and crossed her legs patiently.
She knew the police could not easily override a supreme court custody document without an investigation.
I sat on the edge of the examination table, rubbing the sore spots on my ribs where the brace used to be.
For the first time in two years, I could take a full, deep breath without plastic cutting into my lungs.
I looked down at the heavy plastic shell resting on the floor.
A piece of the internal padding had ripped away when the surgeon cut the padlock.
Hidden beneath the foam lining was a tiny, blinking red light.
I reached down carefully and pulled the small metal device free.

It was not a medical monitor.
It was a high-grade GPS tracker with a hidden audio microphone attached to the battery.
