Chapter 10 - The Freedom

The entire police precinct erupted into absolute chaos.
Dozens of officers drew their weapons and aimed them directly at Grandma's chest.
Dad violently shoved me behind a heavy concrete desk to protect me from the gunfire.
Grandma screamed that if she could not have the millions, nobody would ever see a single penny of it.
Before she could pull the trigger, the police chief fired a single, precise shot.
The bullet struck Grandma in the shoulder, sending her heavy silver pistol skittering across the tile floor.
Officers immediately swarmed her, pinning her to the ground and locking heavy steel handcuffs on her wrists.
She was dragged away to a maximum-security prison hospital, screaming curses into the morning air.
Within weeks, a federal judge permanently revoked her custody and returned me legally to my father.
The massive trust fund was completely secured in a protected account for my future education.
I finally felt the warmth of the sun on my face as I ran through the park without a heavy plastic brace crushing my ribs.
Dad and I moved to a beautiful new house near the ocean, finally free to live our lives in absolute peace.
Everything was absolutely perfect.
One evening, while unpacking boxes in my new bedroom, I found a hidden compartment inside my mother's old jewelry box.
Inside was a handwritten letter from my mother warning me that Grandma was never acting alone.

The final line of the letter stated that my father was the one who originally mixed the poison into her drinks.
I looked up in terror just as my bedroom door slowly creaked open, and my father stood there holding a steaming cup of tea.
