Chapter 6 - The DNA Lie

The entire world seemed to stop spinning for a terrifying, breathless moment.

My sister let out a choked sob, staring in horror at the baby in my arms.

My brother-in-law tightened his grip on his mother, demanding to know if she was lying.

She smiled wickedly, insisting she had bribed a greedy nurse to make the switch in the maternity ward.

She claimed the real heir was safely hidden away at an undisclosed location across the country.

She said if we arrested her, we would never see our true flesh and blood again.

I looked down at the beautiful little boy wrapped securely in the blue blanket.

I categorically refused to believe this monster's venomous words.

My sister suddenly stepped forward, her eyes blazing with fierce maternal anger.

She knelt down beside the wicked woman and slapped her viciously across the face.

The mother-in-law gasped in shock, completely caught off guard by the violent strike.

My sister pulled down the collar of the baby’s tiny cotton shirt.

There was a distinct, crescent-shaped birthmark resting perfectly on his left shoulder.

My brother-in-law pulled down his own collar, revealing the exact same hereditary mark on his skin.

The mother-in-law’s malicious lie collapsed instantly under the undeniable weight of visual proof.

She had just been stalling for time, trying to manipulate us with pure psychological torture.

My brother-in-law dragged her to her feet and shoved her roughly against the side of the truck.

He told the angry mechanic to watch her closely while he called the authorities.

I finally dialed 911, screaming for police and ambulances to arrive at the warehouse district.

The dispatcher assured me that multiple units were already on the way to our exact location.

We waited in tense silence, the distant wail of sirens slowly growing louder over the horizon.

The police cars swarmed the industrial park, their red and blue lights flashing brightly against the buildings.

Officers jumped out with their weapons drawn, securing the perimeter immediately.

They placed the mother-in-law in heavy steel handcuffs and read her her Miranda rights.

Paramedics rushed over with a medical kit to treat my sister’s severe crash injuries.

We sat on the bumper of the ambulance, finally feeling a shred of safety after the ordeal.

A detective approached us with a grim expression on his weathered face.

He held up a clear evidence bag containing the mother-in-law's confiscated cell phone.

He asked us if we recognized the last number she had dialed before her arrest.

My brother-in-law looked at the screen and his blood ran completely cold in his veins.

The number belonged to the lead detective of the local police precinct standing right in front of us.

The officer standing in front of us was not here to rescue us at all.
