Chapter 1 - The Digital Trail

My brother-in-law gripped the phone tightly as the screen illuminated his angry face.
He unlocked the device immediately because he knew his wife's private passcode.
His mother’s face turned completely pale as she watched his eyes scan the display.
The phone was open to a hidden messaging app that my sister never used.
He read the drafted messages out loud, his voice shaking with absolute fury.
His mother had been impersonating my sister for the last six months.
She had been messaging a private psychiatrist, claiming she was having violent delusions about harming her own baby.
The digital trail was designed to perfectly frame my sister for whatever was about to happen today.
My brother-in-law realized his mother had planned to drown the newborn in the washer and blame it on his wife’s fabricated insanity.
I felt a cold sweat break out across my neck as the sheer evil of her plan settled over the room.
We had caught her mere seconds before she could execute the final step.
Suddenly, a red notification banner flashed across the top of the phone screen.
It was a live alert from a hidden GPS tracker installed on my sister’s car.
My sister had told us she was just going to the corner pharmacy to pick up more diapers.
But the GPS dot was blinking rapidly at an abandoned industrial park five miles outside of town.
My brother-in-law looked up from the screen, his eyes wide with sheer terror.
His mother smiled a wicked, blood-stained smile and wiped her split lip.
She looked at us and laughed with a chilling lack of emotion.
She proudly stated that my sister was already dead.
The laundry room suddenly felt like a shrinking cage as the reality of her words sank in.
The detergent smell was now mixed with the metallic scent of blood from our fight.
My nephew whimpered, sensing the chaotic energy radiating from his father’s tense muscles.
My brother-in-law grabbed his mother fiercely by the collar of her expensive coat.
He slammed her against the doorframe, demanding to know exactly what she had done.
She just kept smiling that terrifying, vacant smile.
She confessed that the brakes on my sister’s car had been cut three hours ago.
She had paid a dirty mechanic to ensure the car would never make it back home.
The notification on the phone was not just a location update.
It was a severe crash detection alert sent directly to the emergency contacts.
My sister had been in a massive, devastating accident.
And his mother had intercepted the alert to make sure no one would go looking for her.
I grabbed the car keys from the kitchen counter without a moment of hesitation.
We had to leave this monster behind and find my sister immediately.
But as I opened the front door, two large men in dark suits stepped onto our porch.

They blocked our only exit with their massive frames.
One of them reached inside his jacket and pulled out a heavy black pistol.
