Chapter 4 - The Poisonous Trap

The chemical smoke burned our eyes and throats like pure, corrosive acid.
My brother-in-law swung his tire iron wildly against the reinforced steel door.
The metal clanged loudly, but the heavy door did not even dent under his immense strength.
I wrapped my thick jacket tightly around my nephew’s face to protect his tiny lungs.
My sister collapsed into a violent coughing fit on the dusty concrete floor.
She was already incredibly weak from the car crash and losing blood fast.
I looked around the small office frantically for another potential way out.
There were no windows, only the small vent where the toxic gas was pouring in.
My brother-in-law realized the door was impenetrable and shifted his strategy.
He turned his attention to the drywall on the opposite side of the room.
He raised the iron bar and smashed it brutally into the old, brittle wall.
A large chunk of plaster shattered, revealing the wooden structural studs beneath.
He struck the wall again and again, fighting for the lives of his wife and his newborn son.
He managed to break a hole just large enough for a person to squeeze through.
He pushed my sister through the jagged opening first, ensuring she was safely in the hallway.
I followed closely behind her, clutching the crying baby tightly in my arms.
My brother-in-law squeezed through last just as the room filled completely with the deadly gas.
We collapsed into the adjacent hallway, gasping for clean, fresh air.
My sister was pale and trembling uncontrollably as I helped her sit up.
She whispered that her mother-in-law had orchestrated this entire nightmare for one specific reason.
The baby was the sole heir to a massive offshore trust fund worth millions of dollars.
My brother-in-law’s late father had set it up in secret before he died to protect the child.
The mother-in-law had found out and realized she needed full legal custody of the child to access the money.
She needed both parents legally declared unfit or dead to become the primary guardian.
We finally understood the terrifying, sociopathic depth of her financial greed.
We helped my sister to her feet and limped slowly toward the factory exit.
We thought we had finally outsmarted her deadly trap and survived the worst of it.
But as we stepped out into the fading daylight, we froze in pure horror.

A dark luxury SUV was parked directly behind my damaged sedan.
The mother-in-law was standing next to the vehicle, holding a loaded handgun.
