Chapter 5 - The Stolen Deed

I was aggressively shoved into the cramped, sweltering backseat of the police cruiser, my wrists throbbing in intense pain.

Through the heavily tinted window, I watched Spencer wrap his arm proudly around Penelope while Evelyn laughed victoriously with the corrupt police officer.

They had completely outsmarted me, stealing my massive home and having me humiliated in public all in a single afternoon.

The humiliating drive to the downtown Miami precinct felt like it lasted an absolute eternity.

As soon as I was aggressively processed and thrown into a cold, concrete holding cell, I used my one permitted phone call to contact Mister Miller.

"I am already standing in the precinct lobby with your emergency bail money, Missus Vanguard," Miller urgently answered before the first ring even finished.

Within thirty minutes, I was quietly released out the back door of the dirty police station to avoid the local press.

Miller ushered me into the tinted backseat of his waiting private town car, handing me a cold bottle of water and my unlocked laptop.

"We need to immediately figure out exactly how Spencer managed to legally transfer the mansion's deed without my physical signature," I demanded while rapidly opening my computer.

Miller pulled out a thick stack of printed server logs and handed them to me with a grim, apologetic expression.

"I heavily investigated the Apex mainframe while you were being painfully booked into holding," Miller explained carefully.

"The real estate transfer required a supreme, top-level executive digital override, which means Spencer could not have done it by himself," Miller revealed softly.

"Only one other living person in the entire world currently has those elite security credentials, Laura," he added with a heavy sigh.

I rapidly typed my master password into the laptop, my hands shaking violently as I accessed the company's internal tracking system.

The digital footprints were absolutely undeniable, clearly showing the exact terminal that authorized the fraudulent property transfer.

It was Chloe, my brilliant executive vice president and my most deeply trusted personal protege.

I had practically raised Chloe in the corporate world, paying off her massive student loans and treating her exactly like the little sister I never had.

"Why would Chloe ever help a pathetic loser like Spencer steal my home?" I whispered, feeling a fresh, agonizing wave of betrayal wash over me.

"I think you need to look at the mansion's hidden security cameras to fully understand her motives," Miller gently suggested, pointing at my glowing screen.

I quickly logged into the hidden cameras I had secretly installed around the Coral Gables property years ago.

I immediately pulled up the live, high-definition video feed covering the back garden where the ruined wedding tent still stood.

The panicked guests were entirely gone, and the expensive food was left rotting on the tables.

But standing in the absolute center of the deserted garden were two people sharing a highly passionate, deeply intimate kiss.

It was Spencer, still wearing his ivory wedding suit, tightly holding Chloe in his arms.

Penelope was absolutely nowhere to be found, completely oblivious to the fact that her new husband was already aggressively cheating on her with my best friend.

"Chloe does not just want your powerful company, Laura, she clearly wants your entire life," Miller observed quietly from the opposite seat.

I slammed the laptop shut, an incredibly dangerous, freezing calm suddenly washing over my entire body.

"Call the elite private investigators immediately, Miller, because we are going directly to war," I commanded with absolute authority.

"I want them to dig into every single second of Spencer's pathetic life, especially that suspicious car accident from eight years ago," I ordered ruthlessly.

Two hours later, while we were hiding out in a secure luxury hotel, my phone buzzed with an urgent, encrypted message from the lead investigator.

"Missus Vanguard, Spencer's highway accident was completely faked, but that is not the worst thing we just discovered," the message read.

I quickly clicked on the secure attachment, revealing a bright, clear photograph that made my blood instantly run completely cold.
