Chapter 1 - The Gate Crasher

"My son is getting married today to a real woman," my mother-in-law said as she slammed the gate in my face.

"You do not belong in this house anymore," she added with a cruel, triumphant smirk.

I had just stepped out of a taxi in front of the mansion in Coral Gables where I had lived for the past eight years.

I was dragging a heavy silver suitcase, completely exhausted after a seventeen-hour business trip from San Antonio.

I was still holding my phone, staring at the loving text message Spencer had sent me that very morning.

"I miss you so much, please travel safely, and we will have a romantic dinner together tonight," his message read.

But there was absolutely no dinner waiting for me behind that ornate iron gate.

Instead, a massive white event tent covered the entire expanse of my beautifully manicured garden.

Expensive white rose arrangements meticulously lined the cobblestone walkways I had paid to install.

A lively mariachi band was tuning its instruments while more than a hundred elegant guests raised their glasses beneath crystal chandeliers.

At the entrance of the garden stood an elaborate wooden sign that read, Spencer and Penelope, Forever.

Spencer was my husband of eight years.

My knees nearly gave out beneath me, but I refused to let a single tear fall from my eyes.

I stared blankly at Evelyn, my deceitful mother-in-law.

She was dressed in an expensive burgundy gown, wearing thick gold bracelets, and smiling with the exact same expression she used whenever she begged me for loan money.

"Where is Spencer?" I demanded with a cold, unwavering voice.

"Do not make a public scene out here, Laura," Evelyn warned while rolling her eyes at me.

"He has already made his final choice, and you need to accept it," she declared proudly.

"Penelope is incredibly young, well-educated, comes from a very prestigious family, and most importantly, she is pregnant," Evelyn gloated.

"At long last, I am finally going to have the beautiful grandchild that you could never give me," she spat viciously.

Her cruel words violently reopened a deeply painful wound she knew all too well.

Eight years earlier, Spencer had been severely injured in a horrific highway accident on the Key West highway.

I desperately sold the only apartment my late parents had left me to pay for his multiple surgeries, his grueling rehabilitation, and Evelyn's hidden gambling debts.

For several agonizing months, I slept upright in a rigid hospital chair just to remain by his side.

One terrible night, while sprinting down the hall to get a doctor because Spencer could not breathe, I tripped and fell violently down a concrete flight of stairs.

I tragically lost the unborn baby I was carrying, and the severe medical complications left me with almost zero chance of ever becoming pregnant again.

Spencer had held my hand in that hospital bed and sworn that no one would ever be allowed to humiliate me because of that profound loss.

Now, his own mother was actively using my greatest heartbreak as a weapon to throw me out of my own home.

Several curious relatives wandered outside toward the gate after hearing the loud commotion.

Many of these exact same people had comfortably survived for years on generous financial loans I had quietly provided to them.

Even so, they shamelessly began whispering to each other that I was a cold, bitter wife who was too obsessed with corporate work to properly take care of a successful man.

Suddenly, the crowd parted, and Spencer finally appeared.

He was wearing a custom ivory-colored designer suit with a fresh red rose elegantly pinned to his silk lapel.

The arrogant smile completely vanished from his handsome face the absolute second he made eye contact with me.

"Laura, I thought you were not coming back from your business trip until next week," he stammered nervously.

"So that is exactly why you decided to move the secret wedding up?" I asked, my voice dripping with pure disgust.

He hurriedly walked to the gate and lowered his voice to a frantic whisper so the wealthy guests could not hear.

"We will talk about this later in private, Laura," he pleaded while glancing back at the party.

"Penelope is ready to invest millions of dollars into my struggling construction company," he explained as if it justified his betrayal.

"Her wealthy father has powerful political connections all over the entire country, and you never really understood what a visionary CEO actually needs to succeed," he insulted me.

I simply could not help but laugh out loud right in his face.

Spencer genuinely believed he had built his moderately successful company all by himself through sheer hard work.

He had absolutely no idea that every single major contract, every massive line of credit, and even the luxurious house where he was currently celebrating his betrayal existed solely because of my hidden decisions.

For many long years, I had carefully kept the massive secret that I was actually the Chairwoman of the Board of Apex Holdings just to protect his fragile, masculine pride.

I slowly took my cell phone out of my designer handbag.

"Mister Miller, I need you to immediately cancel every single private utility service Apex Holdings currently provides to this Coral Gables property," I instructed my lawyer calmly.

"Shut down the backup power system, drain the water cistern, cut the industrial refrigeration units, and terminate the private security contract," I ordered without hesitation.

"Then, I need you to immediately activate the hostile property recovery clause," I finalized before hanging up.

Evelyn burst into a loud, mocking fit of laughter, clearly thinking I was just bluffing to save face.

Exactly ten minutes later, the cheerful mariachi music abruptly stopped as the main power grid died.

The massive, cooling air conditioning units surrounding the tent completely shut down, leaving the guests sweltering.

The panicked catering staff suddenly realized there was absolutely no running water left in the kitchen cistern to wash the dishes.

The rented industrial refrigerators violently lost power, plunging the expensive wedding cake into darkness.

Under the blazing, unforgiving July heat, furious guests began abandoning the suffocating tent as the bride's heavy makeup rapidly melted and the luxury seafood buffet began to severely spoil.

Spencer desperately ran toward the front gate, completely drenched in nervous sweat and panic.

"What in the world did you just do?" he screamed at me through the iron bars.

I calmly slipped my cell phone back into my leather bag and gracefully lifted my heavy silver suitcase.

"I simply took back everything that has always belonged to me," I replied with a chilling smile.

As the frustrated mariachi band packed up their heavy instruments without playing a single celebratory song, I suddenly realized that ruining this wedding was only the very beginning of my revenge.

Suddenly, a tall, imposing older man in a black tuxedo stepped out of the dark, sweltering tent and locked eyes with me.

It was Arthur Sterling, Penelope's billionaire father, and all the color instantly drained from his face when he recognized me not as Spencer's pathetic wife, but as the ruthless Apex CEO who secretly controlled all of his corporate debt.
