Chapter 8 - The True Thief

The revelation that Tom’s entire retirement fund had been drained sent a terrifying shockwave directly through my chest.

I looked at my husband, expecting him to collapse under the sheer weight of losing his entire life savings in a single day.

Stella eagerly waved her smartphone in the air, proudly displaying a digital banking screen showing a massive zero balance in Tom’s account.

She gloated that she had successfully wired over eight hundred thousand dollars to an untraceable offshore account in the Cayman Islands.

She mocked Tom for being a foolish old man who used predictable passwords and left his sensitive mail sitting on the kitchen counter.

Rachel instantly stopped screaming at her mother, her greedy eyes lighting up at the mention of nearly a million dollars in stolen cash.

She quickly changed her tune, linking her arm through Stella’s and praising her mother’s brilliant, ruthless criminal mind.

Julian stared at his wife in absolute horror, finally realizing that the woman he loved was nothing more than a greedy, heartless monster.

He stood up shakily from the grass, stepping away from Rachel as if she were covered in a dangerous, highly contagious disease.

He looked at me with profound sorrow and begged for my forgiveness, vowing to spend the rest of his life making this right.

I did not answer him, because my focus was entirely on Tom, who was staring at Stella’s smartphone with an unreadable expression.

Stella aggressively shoved her phone back into her expensive purse, declaring that they were leaving the country tonight to enjoy their newfound wealth.

She arrogantly thanked us for the lovely barbecue and mockingly told me to enjoy the leftover brisket since it was all we could afford now.

She turned around and began marching confidently toward the wooden gate, expecting Rachel to follow closely behind her.

I desperately grabbed Tom’s arm, begging him to call the police before they could escape and vanish with all of our money forever.

Tom gently patted my hand, his voice incredibly calm and steady as he told me that calling the local police was entirely unnecessary.

He stepped forward and loudly called out to Stella, warning her that she might want to check the status of her offshore wire transfer.

Stella paused at the gate, letting out an annoyed sigh before pulling her smartphone back out to humor him.

She unlocked the screen and opened her banking application, preparing to gloat one final time about her massive, successful theft.

Suddenly, her confident smile completely vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror as she stared at the glowing screen.

She frantically tapped the screen over and over again, her breathing becoming rapid and shallow as panic set in.

Rachel grabbed the phone from her mother’s shaking hands, demanding to know what was wrong with the international transfer.

Rachel gasped loudly, reading the bright red error message flashing aggressively across the digital banking application.

The message clearly stated that the account had been completely frozen by the Federal Bureau of Investigation due to suspected wire fraud.

Tom smiled a cold, calculating smile and reached into his back pocket to pull out a sleek, modern smartphone of his own.

He revealed that he had received a security alert regarding the suspicious login attempt on his retirement account three entire days ago.
