Chapter 2 - The Secret Debt

I stood completely paralyzed by the horrifying words that had just left Stella’s mouth.

My mind raced as I tried to process the idea that my son was entirely bankrupt and relying on his mother-in-law for survival.

Julian had a fantastic job at an engineering firm, and he had always been incredibly responsible with his finances.

I turned my gaze back to Julian, desperately searching his pale face for any sign that Stella was lying.

He refused to meet my eyes, opting instead to stare miserably at the grass beneath his expensive shoes.

Rachel crossed her arms and proudly announced that she had been funding his entire lifestyle since he ruined his credit score.

She loudly complained that she had sacrificed her own luxury vacations just to ensure they did not lose their beautiful house.

Erica and Louisa stood quietly by the sweet tea pitcher, exchanging deeply uncomfortable glances as the family drama unfolded.

I asked Julian why he had never come to his own parents when he was struggling to pay his bills.

I reminded him that Tom and I had plenty of savings and would have gladly helped him navigate any financial hardship.

Julian finally looked up, his eyes shining with unshed tears and profound humiliation.

He quietly whispered that he was too ashamed to admit his failures to the man who had taught him how to manage money.

Rachel interrupted him with a sharp, unsympathetic scoff, declaring that his pride was exactly what got them into this mess.

She loudly demanded that Julian finish packing the meat so they could leave this hostile environment immediately.

I slammed my hand down on the wooden table, surprising everyone with the loud, echoing thud.

I stated firmly that the meat was staying exactly where it was, and nobody was leaving until we had a real conversation.

I looked directly at Rachel and asked her how Julian could possibly be bankrupt when he earned a six-figure salary.

Rachel sneered and claimed that my son was secretly a financial disaster who could not manage a simple budget.

She confidently stated that her mother, Stella, was the only reason they were not living on the streets right now.

Tom suddenly stepped away from the grill, tossing his favorite cooking apron onto a nearby chair.

He walked over to the table, his usually gentle eyes now hardened with deep suspicion and confusion.

He looked directly at Julian and asked him what exactly he had done with the massive check he was given last month.

Rachel spun around to face Tom, her expression instantly twisting into a mask of pure shock.

She demanded to know what check Tom was talking about.

Tom kept his eyes locked firmly on his sweating, terrified son.

My husband revealed that he had secretly loaned Julian twenty thousand dollars just four weeks ago to catch up on the mortgage.

Rachel slowly turned her head back toward Julian, her face turning pale as she realized she knew absolutely nothing about this money.
