Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The sound of Stella’s triumphant laughter echoed sickeningly across the patio, chilling me to the very bone.

Tom aggressively grabbed Julian by the collar of his shirt, hauling his weeping son up from the grass.

He demanded to know how Julian could possibly betray his own parents and risk the very roof over our heads.

Julian choked on his tears, desperately apologizing and swearing that he had planned to pay the loan back secretly over time.

I felt a wave of absolute nausea wash over me as I realized the immense gravity of the situation we were in.

My own flesh and blood had actively participated in a scheme that could leave Tom and me entirely homeless in our old age.

I looked at Rachel, expecting her to be horrified by her mother’s successful, malicious theft of our property.

Instead, Rachel simply adjusted her expensive designer handbag and looked at us with a completely bored, apathetic expression.

She stated that Julian’s criminal actions were entirely his own problem, and she was not going to take the blame for his stupidity.

She told her mother that it was time to leave this pathetic, dramatic family behind and go enjoy their new money.

I stepped directly into Rachel’s path, my maternal sorrow instantly transforming into a blazing, protective fury.

I ordered them both to get off my property immediately and warned them that I was calling the police the second they left.

I promised Stella that she would spend the rest of her miserable life in a federal prison for extortion and bank fraud.

Stella simply rolled her eyes, casually reaching into her canvas tote bag that was supposed to be used for our barbecue meat.

She pulled out a thick, official-looking manila folder and waved it tauntingly in my face.

She explained that she had not just taken out a loan against the house; she had successfully executed a total transfer of the deed.

She proudly declared that because Julian had provided a flawless power of attorney, she was now the sole legal owner of our property.

Tom lunged forward to grab the folder, but Rachel quickly stepped in front of her mother, aggressively pushing my husband back.

Rachel loudly warned Tom that assaulting a woman on her own private property would land him in jail by nightfall.

She looked around my carefully tended garden and the beautiful patio Tom had built with his own two hands.

She sneered and stated that the house had good bones, but the outdated decor would absolutely have to go.

She coldly informed me that Tom and I had exactly forty-eight hours to pack all of our belongings and vacate the premises.

If we were not gone by Tuesday morning, she promised to have the local sheriff arrive to forcefully evict us from our home.

She linked her arm through her mother’s arm, and the two women confidently turned to walk out of our backyard.

Just as they reached the wooden gate, Tom let out a deep, booming laugh that completely halted them in their tracks.
