Chapter 4 - The Extortion Plot

Rachel stared at her mother in complete disbelief, unable to process the horrifying accusation her husband had just made.
She laughed nervously, insisting that Julian was simply making up a ridiculous lie to cover his own financial incompetence.
She turned to Stella for confirmation, desperately expecting her mother to deny the outrageous extortion claims.
Stella remained completely silent, her eyes darting nervously toward the wooden gate as if calculating her escape route.
Julian finally found his courage, standing up taller and looking his wife directly in the eyes.
He explained that Stella had a severe, uncontrollable gambling addiction that had entirely consumed her life savings.
He revealed that two years ago, Stella had secretly accumulated massive debts with incredibly dangerous, unforgiving people.
Stella had threatened to tell Rachel a fabricated story about Julian having an affair unless he paid off her aggressive bookies.
Julian confessed that he loved Rachel so much he was terrified of losing her to her mother’s vicious lies.
He admitted he had been draining his own salary to keep Stella afloat, which was why he pretended they could not afford the mortgage.
Rachel began to hyperventilate, shaking her head violently as she refused to accept that her mother was a manipulative monster.
She screamed at Julian, calling him a coward and a liar for trying to turn her against her own flesh and blood.
Stella finally spoke up, her voice dripping with venom as she fully leaned into the victim role.
Stella cried fake tears and claimed Julian was a sociopath trying to ruin her pristine reputation to hide his own gambling habits.
I watched this chaotic scene unfold, feeling a sickening mixture of rage and profound sadness for my manipulated son.
I loudly ordered Stella to stop playing games and admit what she had done to my child.
Tom stepped forward, pointing an angry finger at Stella and demanding she repay his retirement money immediately.
Rachel defensively positioned herself in front of her mother, acting as a human shield against our righteous anger.
She declared that she believed her mother over a man who had admittedly been lying to her for two entire years.
She announced they were leaving and explicitly forbade Julian from ever speaking to her mother again.
Just as Rachel grabbed her canvas tote bags to storm out, my niece Erica nervously cleared her throat.
Erica stepped forward from the shadows of the patio, her hands shaking as she pulled her smartphone from her pocket.
She apologized for eavesdropping, but stated that she could no longer remain silent after hearing Stella’s blatant lies.
Erica explained that she worked as a senior loan officer at the primary community bank in our town.

She looked directly at Stella and revealed that Stella had visited the bank branch just yesterday afternoon.
Erica announced to the entire backyard that Stella had attempted to take out a massive second mortgage against my house using completely forged documents.
