Chapter 5 - The Forged Documents

The entire backyard seemed to hold its collective breath as Erica’s shocking revelation hung heavily in the air.

I felt the blood drain completely from my face as I tried to comprehend how Stella could possibly borrow money against my home.

Tom aggressively demanded to know how someone who was not on the deed could even attempt such a massive, illegal transaction.

Erica scrolled nervously through her phone, pulling up the digital security scans she had taken of the suspicious application.

She explained that Stella had presented a signed power of attorney document, granting her full financial control over our estate.

Erica revealed that the document appeared incredibly legitimate, complete with official notary stamps and high-quality signatures.

Rachel scoffed loudly, attempting to dismiss the entire situation as a simple misunderstanding or a banking error.

She claimed her mother was likely just trying to secure a small personal loan and the bank teller was simply confused.

Erica shook her head firmly, stating that she personally reviewed the file and immediately flagged it as potential fraud.

She handed her phone to Tom, allowing my husband to see the incredibly accurate forgery of his own signature on the screen.

Tom stared at the digital image, his eyes narrowing in intense, furious concentration as he examined the familiar handwriting.

He looked up at Stella, his voice terrifyingly calm as he asked her how she had managed to copy his signature so perfectly.

Stella panicked, backing away toward the wooden fence while frantically claiming that she had never been to that bank in her life.

She pointed a trembling finger at Erica, accusing my niece of fabricating evidence to destroy her beautiful family.

I walked over to Tom and looked at the glowing screen, recognizing the subtle, unmistakable loop of the letter 'T' in my husband’s name.

It was not a cheap forgery drawn from memory; it was an exact replica that could only be created by someone intimately familiar with Tom’s writing.

I slowly turned my gaze toward my son, my heart shattering into a million pieces as a horrifying realization washed over me.

Julian was staring at the ground, his entire body shaking as tears streamed freely down his pale cheeks.

I gently asked him to look at me, desperately praying that my terrible maternal instinct was wrong for once.

Julian fell to his knees in the grass, burying his face in his hands as he began to sob uncontrollably.

He confessed that he was the one who had forged his father’s signature on the power of attorney documents.

He admitted that Stella had ruthlessly blackmailed him, threatening to show Rachel fake photographs of him with another woman.

He was so terrified of losing his wife that he committed a major federal felony just to appease his monstrous mother-in-law.

Rachel looked down at her sobbing husband, her expression completely devoid of any sympathy or love.

She coldly stated that she could not believe she had married such a pathetic, spineless criminal.

Stella suddenly smiled a cruel, victorious smile, completely dropping her innocent victim act now that Julian had confessed.

She mocked my son’s tears, proudly announcing that the bank had actually approved the massive loan before Erica could stop it.
