Chapter 3 - The Missing Money

The revelation of the secret twenty thousand dollar loan hit the patio like a sudden, violent thunderclap.
Rachel stared at Julian with her mouth slightly open, her perfectly manicured hands trembling with rising fury.
She took a step toward him, demanding to know where the hell that money had gone if it did not go to their mortgage.
Julian took a cautious step backward, physically shrinking away from his wife’s aggressive posture.
He stammered defensively, claiming that he had used the money to take care of some unexpected, critical household expenses.
Rachel let out a scream of pure frustration, pointing out that she was the one who managed all of their household bills.
She screamed that not a single penny of that twenty thousand dollars had ever touched their joint bank accounts.
Stella suddenly looked incredibly nervous, shifting uncomfortably in her chair and avoiding eye contact with everyone.
She reached out and gently touched Rachel’s arm, suggesting that they should go home and discuss this in private.
Rachel yanked her arm away from her mother, completely ignoring the attempt to deescalate the situation.
She cornered Julian against the edge of the patio, threatening to file for divorce if he did not tell her the truth immediately.
Tom stepped between them, playing the role of the protective father, but he also demanded answers from his son.
Tom angrily stated that he had pulled that money from his hard-earned retirement fund because Julian begged him for help.
He yelled that he had kept the loan a secret from me because Julian promised it was a one-time emergency.
I felt a sharp sting of betrayal knowing my husband had hidden this from me, but I pushed it aside to focus on my son.
I softly asked Julian to please explain what was happening so we could fix it together as a family.
Julian looked at my pleading face, and then he glanced over at Stella, who was subtly shaking her head in a desperate warning.
He closed his eyes tightly, a single tear escaping and rolling down his flushed cheek.
He confessed that he had never missed a single mortgage payment, and he was absolutely not bankrupt.
Rachel gasped loudly, confused by this sudden contradiction to everything she thought she knew about their finances.
Julian admitted that he had lied to Rachel about being broke so he could secretly funnel his paycheck elsewhere.
He then turned to his wife, his voice cracking as he prepared to deliver the ultimate, heartbreaking truth.
He confessed that he gave the twenty thousand dollars directly to Stella.
