Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Assault

The federal helicopters were still maneuvering for a safe landing zone, leaving me completely alone to face the syndicate's heavy assault team.

I grabbed the submachine gun, checked my remaining ammunition, and sprinted down the hallway toward the basement stairs.

The armored men had already blown the external cellar doors wide open, flooding the narrow stairwell with harsh tactical lighting.

I positioned myself behind a thick concrete support pillar, taking a slow, deep breath to steady my racing heart.

The first heavily armed man stepped aggressively into the basement, raising his assault rifle to secure the perimeter.

I leaned out from cover and fired a precise, controlled burst, striking the weak point in his heavy body armor right beneath his arm.

He collapsed heavily against the wall, but his three comrades instantly returned a deafening hail of suppressive gunfire.

Concrete dust and jagged shrapnel exploded all around my face, forcing me to retreat deeper into the shadows of the basement.

They were using specialized armor-piercing rounds, completely shredding the drywall and destroying the beautiful finished basement I had built myself.

I realized I could not win a prolonged firefight against their superior firepower, so I decided to use the environment to my absolute advantage.

I shot out the overhead lighting fixtures, plunging the entire basement into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

I slipped on my own night-vision goggles, instantly gaining a massive tactical advantage over the blinded, confused mercenaries.

I moved silently behind the second man, grabbed the heavy strap of his tactical vest, and threw him violently down the concrete stairs.

The third mercenary panicked and fired wildly into the darkness, accidentally shooting his own teammate in the chaos.

I dropped to the floor, swept the remaining man's legs out from under him, and struck him hard in the temple with the heavy stock of my weapon.

The basement was finally quiet, filled only with the groans of the incapacitated mercenaries and the smell of sulfur.

I secured their weapons and walked back upstairs, incredibly exhausted but victorious.

When I reached the living room, the heavy oak dining table was completely overturned, and the plastic zip ties had been cleanly cut.

Jessica and Ryan were entirely gone, and my wall safe had been ripped completely out of the plaster wall.
