Chapter 4 - The Shadow Mercenary

I held my breath completely, letting the intruder sweep the dark room with the laser sight of his submachine gun.
This was not a corrupt local cop or a confused family member, this was a highly trained professional mercenary.
He moved toward the master bathroom, his footsteps completely silent on the expensive rugs I had imported from Turkey.
I lunged from the shadows with explosive speed, grabbing his weapon arm and twisting it sharply until the bone popped.
The mercenary grunted in pain and swung a heavy elbow toward my temple, but I easily ducked under the brutal strike.
I drove my knee into his ribs and swept his legs out from under him, sending him crashing heavily to the floor.
Before he could recover, I pressed the cold steel of my combat knife directly against his carotid artery.
I demanded to know who he worked for and why a professional hitman was inside my residential property.
He spat blood onto the floor and laughed, revealing that Ryan's live stream had attracted the attention of a dark web syndicate.
Ryan had blindly posted the GPS coordinates of the house, offering to sell whatever was inside the vault to the highest anonymous bidder.
The syndicate had immediately dispatched a localized extraction team to steal the military servers before the federal authorities could arrive.
There were currently five more heavily armed mercenaries securing the perimeter of my house, treating my family like expendable hostages.
I realized with a sickening drop in my stomach that Ryan's arrogant stupidity had just signed death warrants for everyone downstairs.
I stripped the mercenary of his weapons, secured him to the bedpost with heavy tactical zip ties, and took his encrypted radio.
I listened to the radio chatter, confirming that the mercenaries were preparing to execute the civilians in the living room to eliminate witnesses.
I had exactly three minutes to neutralize a highly trained kill squad without any backup or federal support.
I quietly loaded the mercenary's submachine gun and racked the slide, letting the cold mechanical sound focus my mind.

I opened my bedroom door and stepped out into the hallway, officially declaring war inside my own home.
Suddenly, a massive explosion rocked the foundation of the house, blowing the front doors completely off their hinges.
