Chapter 1 - The Tactical Retreat

I gripped the steering wheel of my truck until my knuckles turned completely white.

Through the rearview mirror, I watched Ryan carrying a cooler of cheap beer onto my pristine cedar deck.

My sister Jessica was right beside him, handing out my expensive customized guest towels to people I did not even know.

They genuinely believed I was just a low-level government paper pusher who would quietly swallow this massive disrespect.

They had absolutely no idea that I commanded an elite intelligence battalion and had orchestrated international extractions in active war zones.

This lake house was the only sanctuary I had in the world, funded by eleven years of hazardous duty pay and relentless savings.

I pulled my secure military phone from my tactical jacket and dialed my property manager, a retired Marine named Davis.

I told Davis that my property had been compromised by hostile squatters and I needed his immediate legal intervention.

Davis did not ask any questions, he simply promised to be there in ten minutes with the local county sheriff.

Next, I dialed the senior duty officer at my command post to request a specialized federal transport unit to secure the premises.

I parked under the dense canopy of ancient oak trees, completely out of sight from the main house but with a clear tactical view.

I rolled down my window and listened to the obnoxious pop music blaring from my custom surround sound system.

Anger burned hot in my chest, but I forced my military discipline to push the raw emotion down into a cold, calculating focus.

A black SUV with heavily tinted windows suddenly tore down the driveway, completely bypassing the main gate security code.

Two men in dark, cheap suits stepped out of the vehicle and walked directly toward my front porch.

Ryan puffed out his chest and marched down the steps to confront the strangers, clearly expecting to intimidate them with his arrogant attitude.

The taller man in the suit reached into his jacket, pulled out a thick legal document, and slapped it hard against Ryan's chest.

I expected Ryan to panic, but instead, he threw his head back and laughed maniacally while waving the document in the air.

Ryan pointed directly toward the exact cluster of oak trees where my truck was currently hidden in the shadows.

The two men in suits immediately drew black semi-automatic weapons from their holsters and aimed them right at my windshield.
