Chapter 6 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I pressed my forearm tightly against Volkov's throat.
"Do not lie to me, Viktor," I growled, applying more pressure to his windpipe.
"The public registry clearly states your shell company purchased the estate!"
Volkov gasped for air and shook his head frantically.
"It was a trap designed to lure my men here to kill you," Volkov choked out.
"Someone used my company's name and offshore routing numbers to make the purchase anonymously!"
I released my grip slightly, my tactical mind racing to process this impossible new information.
Only someone with extreme high-level government clearance could spoof a Russian syndicate's financial network.
"Who orchestrated this setup, Viktor?" I demanded.
"I don't know the buyer's real name, but the transaction was authorized from a federal server in Washington," Volkov coughed.
I threw Volkov to the ground and turned back to my armored SUV.
I grabbed my encrypted satellite phone and called Vance immediately.
"Vance, run a deep trace on the IP address that finalized the Thorne Manor sale," I ordered.
Keys clicked rapidly on the other end of the line for thirty agonizing seconds.
"Sir, the purchase was executed by a sitting United States Senator," Vance reported.
"Which Senator?" I asked, though a terrible suspicion was already forming in my mind.
"Senator Robert Thorne, sir," Vance whispered.
My heart completely stopped in my chest.
Robert Thorne was my estranged uncle, a man who had faked his own death twenty years ago to escape a massive embezzlement scandal.
He had secretly returned to seize the family fortune while I was distracted by Sarah and Volkov.
"He wants the land because of the hidden oil reserves beneath the north pasture," I realized aloud.
Sarah had not just sold the house; she had unwittingly invited a ghost back to destroy us all.
My phone suddenly buzzed with a live video message from an unknown encrypted number.
I opened the file and saw my sister Sarah tied to a chair in the grand dining room of Thorne Manor.

Uncle Robert stood behind her, holding a lit flare over a massive pile of historical family documents.
"Come home alone, Elias, or your sister burns with the house," Robert smiled into the camera.
