Chapter 1 - The Encrypted Call

The smell of wet straw and decay faded into the background as I held my daughter.
Lily buried her dirty face into my faded army jacket.
I pulled the heavy satellite phone from my hidden pocket and dialed a number I had not used in five years.
The line clicked and a crisp voice answered on the first ring.
"Protocol Omega is active, Mr. Thorne," the lawyer said.
"Vance, my sister has crossed a line that cannot be uncrossed," I whispered.
"I have already reviewed the town's property registry, sir."
"Sarah believes she is the sole owner of Thorne Manor."
"She is currently finalizing a private sale of the entire estate to a foreign developer."
My grip tightened around the heavy plastic of the phone.
Sarah was not just abusing my child; she was trying to liquidate our family legacy.
"Freeze all her accounts and activate my majority shareholder status immediately," I commanded.
"It will be done within the hour, sir."
I hung up the phone and looked down at my beautiful, trembling daughter.
"We are leaving this awful place right now, Lily," I promised softly.
I carried her out of the pigsty and walked straight past the grand porch where Sarah's lavish party was in full swing.
Sarah did not even notice us leaving the shadows of the property.
We walked three miles down the road until a sleek, black armored SUV pulled up beside us.
My private security team stepped out and opened the heavy door for us.
We drove to the grandest luxury hotel in the center of town.
I carried Lily through the golden lobby, completely ignoring the shocked stares of the wealthy guests.
We reached the private penthouse suite on the top floor.
The room was warm, safe, and filled with the scent of fresh lavender.
I ordered a massive feast of hot food and ran a warm bubble bath for my exhausted child.
As Lily finally smiled for the first time in years, a heavy knock echoed from the penthouse door.

I opened it to find a towering man in a sharp grey suit holding a silenced pistol.
"Sarah sends her regards, Captain," the assassin sneered.
