Chapter 2 - The Uninvited Guest

I did not flinch as the cold steel of the weapon pointed directly at my chest.
Ten years of black-ops combat had trained me to see the world in slow motion.
Before the assassin could even tense his trigger finger, I grabbed the barrel of his gun and twisted it violently upward.
The silenced weapon fired a single shot into the ceiling plaster.
I drove my knee into his ribs and sent him crashing hard onto the marble floor of the hallway.
My security detail rushed out of the nearby elevator and immediately pinned the groaning man to the ground.
"Search his pockets," I ordered my lead guard, Marcus.
Marcus pulled a folded piece of heavy parchment from the assassin's tailored jacket.
I unfolded the document and recognized the official seal of the town's family court.
It was an emergency custody order signed by a local judge.
The document legally demanded that Lily be returned to Sarah's immediate care due to my status as an unfit vagrant.
Sarah had somehow known I would take Lily and had moved faster than I anticipated.
I locked the penthouse door and walked back into the warm living room.
Lily was sitting on the plush sofa, happily eating a slice of warm apple pie.
"Is everything okay, Daddy?" she asked with wide, innocent eyes.
"Everything is perfect, sweetheart," I lied with a gentle smile.
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked down at the rainy streets of my hometown.
Three local police cruisers were already pulling up to the front entrance of my hotel.
Their red and blue lights flashed aggressively against the wet pavement.
Sarah had sent the corrupt local police to enforce her fake custody order.
My phone vibrated in my pocket with an incoming call from Vance.
"Sir, the local authorities are attempting to breach the hotel lobby to seize your daughter," Vance warned.
"They have a court order, Vance, which means we cannot fight them with bullets."
May you like
"There is something much worse, sir," Vance added, his voice filled with dread.
"The judge who signed the order just legally declared you mentally incompetent."
