Chapter 3 - The Broken Gavel

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

If I was legally declared mentally incompetent, I could not sign any documents to reclaim my property or my daughter.

Sarah had orchestrated a brilliant legal trap to strip me of all my remaining power.

"Do not let the police past the lobby," I commanded Marcus through my earpiece.

"I need twenty minutes to tear this corrupt judge's career apart," I said.

I opened my encrypted laptop and accessed the global surveillance network my private military company controlled.

I searched for the name of the local judge who had signed the fraudulent papers.

Judge Thomas Sterling was a man known for his expensive tastes and massive gambling debts.

I quickly hacked into his offshore banking records and found a massive wire transfer from Sarah's personal account.

She had paid him five hundred thousand dollars to steal my child away from me.

I printed the damning financial records and handed the thick folder to Marcus.

"Take this down to the police captain in the lobby," I instructed.

"Tell him that if he takes one step onto my elevator, I will release this evidence to the federal authorities."

Marcus nodded and disappeared into the hallway.

I sat beside Lily and read her a story to drown out the distant sound of shouting from the ground floor.

Fifteen minutes later, the flashing police lights outside my window suddenly turned off.

The cruisers slowly backed away from the hotel entrance and disappeared into the rainy night.

Marcus returned to the penthouse with a satisfied smirk on his face.

"The captain saw the bank statements and decided a fake custody battle wasn't worth federal prison," Marcus reported.

I let out a long breath of relief.

We had won the battle, but the war for my family's legacy was far from over.

"Vance, proceed with the total asset freeze on Thorne Manor," I spoke into my phone.

"Sir, I just tried to execute the freeze, but the system locked me out," Vance replied frantically.

"Sarah just transferred the entire deed of the estate to a terrifying new owner."
