Chapter 8 - The Shipping Yard

The abandoned Long Beach shipping yard was shrouded in a thick, freezing coastal fog.
Adrian arrived in a heavily armored black SUV, with Emma and Noah sitting tensely in the back seat.
He had insisted on bringing them, knowing Marcus would want proof that they were still alive and vulnerable.
Dozens of armed mercenaries stepped out from the shadows of the towering, rusted shipping containers.
They surrounded the vehicle instantly, aiming laser-sighted assault rifles at the windows.
Marcus stood in the center of the yard, looking incredibly smug in his expensive tactical gear.
Lily was tied to a wooden chair near the edge of the deep, dark water, shivering in the cold wind.
Adrian stepped out of the vehicle, leaning heavily on a silver cane to support his recovering legs.
He held the secure metal briefcase tightly in his left hand, glaring at the man who had ruined his life.
Marcus mocked Adrian’s cane, laughing at the pathetic sight of the once-feared Wolf of the West Coast.
He demanded the briefcase, promising to let the girl go once the digital funds were fully verified.
Adrian slowly walked forward, ignoring the guns pointed directly at his chest by the nervous mercenaries.
He handed the heavy briefcase to Marcus, acting perfectly defeated and broken.
Marcus eagerly opened the case, his eyes glowing with greed as he saw the flashing digital drives.
He pulled out a secure tablet to verify the transfer of the billion-dollar empire.
As soon as the screen flashed green, Marcus’s arrogant smile turned into a cruel, sadistic sneer.
He looked at his men and gave a simple, chilling hand gesture.
Marcus ordered his mercenaries to execute Adrian, Emma, and Noah where they stood.
He laughed and said he was never going to leave any loose ends to seek revenge.
Adrian did not flinch, nor did he beg for his life as the guns were cocked.
He simply reached into his coat pocket and pressed the hidden detonator button to trigger the explosive in the briefcase.

He waited for the massive explosion to vaporize Marcus and end the nightmare.
Absolutely nothing happened, leaving the shipyard in a deadly, terrifying silence.
