Chapter 13 - The Midnight Ambush

The heavily armored black SUV tore down the desolate Pacific Coast Highway, completely devoid of headlights to avoid drone surveillance.

Adrian drove with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes scanning the dark, winding coastal road for any sign of an ambush.

Emma sat in the back seat, her arms wrapped protectively around Lily and Noah, who were terrified by the suffocating silence.

They were heading toward a Cold War-era subterranean bunker in the Mojave Desert, a black site Adrian had purchased years ago.

Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion ripped through the asphalt less than fifty yards in front of their speeding vehicle.

Adrian slammed on the brakes, the heavy SUV skidding violently sideways and crashing into the metal guardrail overlooking the roaring ocean.

The vehicle’s electronics instantly fried, plunging the cabin into darkness as a localized electromagnetic pulse washed over the highway.

Before Adrian could even unbuckle his seatbelt, heavily armed mercenaries poured out from the tree line, illuminating the SUV with blinding tactical lights.

A sleek, silver helicopter descended from the stormy sky, its searchlight cutting through the coastal fog like a massive, predatory eye.

Adrian kicked his jammed door open, pulling an assault rifle from the center console and immediately laying down suppressive fire.

He ordered Emma to keep the children on the floorboards, screaming over the deafening roar of automatic gunfire shattering the reinforced glass.

The mercenaries advanced with military precision, pinning Adrian behind the engine block while they systematically flanked his position.

Emma realized they were going to be completely overrun in a matter of seconds if they stayed inside the metal death trap.

She grabbed a smoke grenade from Adrian’s tactical bag, pulled the pin, and tossed it directly out the shattered rear window.

Thick, white chemical smoke instantly blanketed the highway, blinding the advancing mercenaries and causing them to break formation.

Adrian used the momentary chaos to grab Noah and Lily, dragging them out of the vehicle and pushing them toward a concrete drainage ditch.

Just as they reached the edge of the ditch, a figure stepped out of the swirling smoke, completely unaffected by the chaos.

It was Caroline, dressed in a sleek tactical trench coat, holding a customized, gold-plated pistol with a chilling calmness.

She looked down at Adrian, who was bleeding from a shrapnel wound on his forehead, and smiled a smile devoid of any human warmth.

She tilted her head and mockingly whispered that it was finally time for her to collect her daughter.
