Chapter 18 - The Edge of the Cliff

The torrential rain battered the island fortress as Adrian relentlessly tracked Caroline’s footprints through the muddy, tropical jungle.
The island’s security forces were in complete disarray, distracted by Emma’s continuous sniper fire and the explosives planted by the Red Protocol team.
Adrian found Caroline standing at the edge of a massive, jagged cliff overlooking the raging, black ocean.
A small, heavily armored escape boat bobbed violently in the treacherous waves below, her final desperate ticket out of the nightmare she had created.
Caroline turned around as Adrian stepped out of the tree line, her golden pistol aimed directly at his chest, her hands shaking violently.
Her glamorous facade was completely shattered, her hair matted with mud and rain, her eyes wild with the frantic panic of a cornered animal.
She screamed at Adrian to stay back, threatening to shoot him in the heart just like she had planned to do eight years ago.
Adrian did not raise his weapon, slowly walking forward with an imposing, terrifying calm that unsettled her far more than anger.
He asked her if all the lies, the betrayal, and the innocent blood spilled was truly worth the empty pursuit of absolute power.
Caroline laughed hysterically, tears of frustration streaming down her face as she yelled that Adrian’s world was suffocating and she deserved freedom.
She claimed that he would never understand the burden of being married to a man who controlled every single aspect of the city.
Adrian shook his head in pity, realizing that the woman standing before him was completely hollow, devoid of a soul or a conscience.
He took another step forward, calling her bluff, knowing that a true survivor would have already pulled the trigger to guarantee their escape.
Caroline let out a scream of pure frustration and fired the golden pistol, aiming directly at Adrian’s heart.
The gun clicked harmlessly, completely out of ammunition from the frantic firefight back inside the underground vault.
Caroline stared at the empty weapon in absolute shock, her entire world crumbling around her in a matter of seconds.

She slowly backed away, her heels slipping dangerously on the slick, muddy edge of the towering, deadly cliff.
She looked down at the roaring, black ocean, realizing that she had absolutely nowhere left to run and no one left to manipulate.
