Chapter 9 - The Ultimate Sacrifice
Adrian pressed the detonator button a second time, his heart plummeting into his stomach.
The explosive inside the briefcase remained completely inert, failing to detonate as planned.
Marcus laughed hysterically, pulling a small, blinking device from his tactical vest.
He proudly revealed that he had activated a military-grade signal jammer to block any remote transmissions.
He knew Adrian was far too cunning to hand over his empire without setting a deadly trap.
Marcus raised his own pistol, aiming it directly at Lily’s head with a sickening smile.
He decided he was going to make Adrian watch his daughter die before killing him too.
Adrian lunged forward with his cane, desperately trying to close the distance to save his child.
He was too slow, and Marcus’s finger tightened on the heavy trigger.
Suddenly, Emma launched herself forward, diving directly into the path of the bullet.
The gunshot echoed across the shipping yard as the bullet struck Emma squarely in the right shoulder.
She collapsed onto the wet concrete, bleeding heavily but successfully shielding Lily from the fatal shot.
The momentary distraction drew every mercenary's attention toward the fallen woman.
Noah, who had been completely ignored by the guards, seized his only chance to be a hero.
The brave twelve-year-old boy grabbed a heavy metal pipe from the ground and sprinted toward Marcus.
He swung the pipe with all his might, smashing the electronic signal jammer attached to Marcus’s vest.
The device shattered into a dozen pieces, sparking wildly before going completely dead.
Marcus roared in anger, violently backhanding Noah and sending the boy crashing into a shipping container.
He raised his gun again, furious that a child had dared to strike him.
Adrian did not waste a single millisecond of the opening Noah had just created.

He clicked the remote detonator one final time.
The metal briefcase in Marcus’s hand instantly erupted into a massive, blinding ball of roaring fire.
