Chapter 8 - The Ticking Clock

"You have exactly three minutes to evacuate before the incendiary charges detonate," the robotic voice continued.
My father rapidly unlocked Emma's cage, pulling the terrified girl into his strong, protective arms.
"We have to reach the main loading dock doors immediately," my dad ordered, sprinting across the chaotic warehouse floor.
The surviving Syndicate guards abandoned the fight entirely, running frantically toward the emergency exits to save their own lives.
Tyler stayed close behind us, constantly checking our rear flank for any stragglers trying to shoot us in the back.
We reached the massive industrial doors, but the heavy steel barricades had been electronically locked down by the security system.
"The only way to override the lockdown is from the central control room," Tyler shouted over the deafening sirens.
My father handed Emma gently over to Tyler, his expression hardening into absolute, grim determination.
"Take the girls and hide behind the thickest concrete pillar you can find," my dad commanded.
"I am going to rip that control room apart and get the override keycard."
Before my father could take a single step, three remaining elite guards ambushed us from the dark shadows of a shipping container.
They opened fire with heavy automatic weapons, forcing my dad to dive violently in front of Emma and Tyler to shield them.
He took two brutal bullets to his left shoulder, collapsing heavily onto the hard concrete floor.
"Dad!" I screamed in sheer terror, rushing toward him as the guards moved in to finish the job.
My father managed to kick a heavy metal pipe directly into the legs of the closest guard, bringing him down instantly.
Tyler grabbed a discarded rifle and provided heavy covering fire, desperately keeping the remaining elites pinned down.
"Lily, you have to go get the keycard," my father gasped, clutching his profusely bleeding shoulder.
I didn't waste a single second arguing with him as the timer ticked down to exactly ninety seconds.
I sprinted toward the high-security control room, easily slipping past the heavy gunfire echoing behind me.
I kicked the reinforced door open, finding Silas standing frantically near the emergency escape hatch.
He was holding the glowing red override keycard tightly in his hand, preparing to abandon his entire empire.

The escape hatch was located directly above a massive, terrifyingly deep industrial incinerator shaft.
Silas smiled wickedly as he saw me enter, holding the small plastic card dangerously over the fiery abyss.
