Chapter 2 - The Syndicate Enforcers

I stared through the truck window as a dozen men in tactical black gear poured out of the armored vehicles.
My father did not hesitate for a single second.
He violently kicked his door open, launching himself directly at the first two armed men before they could even draw their weapons.
He moved with a terrifying, fluid grace that I had never seen him use during our training sessions.
He struck the first man in the throat, instantly dropping him to the concrete driveway.
He spun flawlessly, sweeping the legs of the second attacker and disarming him before his body hit the ground.
"Run to the basement, Lily!" my father roared over his shoulder.
I scrambled out of the passenger side, sprinting frantically toward the side door of our house.
I glanced back just in time to see Mr. Vance stepping out of the third SUV, hiding nervously behind the tactical guards.
He had cowardly sold us out to whoever these dangerous men were.
I burst into the kitchen, threw open the basement door, and sprinted down the wooden stairs in absolute darkness.
I reached the heavy steel door of the safe room, my tiny fingers desperately punching the security code into the keypad.
The heavy deadbolt clicked open, and I rushed inside, slamming it shut just as heavy boots began stomping around upstairs.
I huddled in the dark corner of the reinforced room, listening to the muffled sounds of a brutal struggle echoing from the driveway.
The violent thuds and shouts lasted for three agonizing minutes before an eerie, terrifying silence settled over the property.
Suddenly, a loud, metallic banging echoed directly against the steel door of my safe room.
"Your father fought bravely, little lotus, but he is currently unconscious and bleeding," a smooth, chilling voice called out from the other side.
"My name is Silas, and I am the leader of the Shadow Syndicate."
I held my breath, gripping a heavy metal flashlight tightly in my sweaty palms.
"We do not want to hurt you, Lily," Silas lied smoothly.
"We just want to bring the rightful heir of the Syndicate back to where she truly belongs."
I squeezed my eyes shut, realizing my father had been hiding a massive, terrifying secret from me my entire life.
"If you do not open this door in ten seconds, we will execute Marcus right here on the floor," Silas threatened coldly.
I heard the distinct, terrifying click of a heavy handgun being cocked directly outside the room.
I knew I could not let my father die because of me.
I slowly reached up and flipped the heavy deadbolt open, fully prepared to fight an army to save him.
But when the door swung open, the hallway was completely empty.

I stepped out cautiously, only to realize the entire house was filled with thick, blinding white smoke.
Before I could react, a heavy tactical net dropped violently from the ceiling, completely trapping me in the darkness.
