Chapter 1 - The Dragon's Shadow

The classroom remained entirely silent as everyone stared at the terrified man holding my martial arts patch.

Mr. Vance’s face had drained of all color, his hands shaking so violently that he nearly dropped the embroidered fabric.

Tyler looked at his father in total confusion, rubbing his sore arm where I had easily controlled his movements seconds earlier.

"Dad, what are you talking about?" Tyler demanded aggressively.

Mr. Vance ignored his teenage son entirely, keeping his wide, fearful eyes locked directly on my calm face.

He slowly backed away from me, treating a nine-year-old girl like a highly dangerous explosive about to detonate.

"Grab your backpack right now, Tyler," Mr. Vance ordered in a frantic, trembling whisper.

"But she attacked me!" Tyler argued, pointing an angry finger in my direction.

His father suddenly grabbed him by the collar of his shirt with surprising force.

"Shut your mouth and walk out that door before you get us both killed," Mr. Vance hissed through clenched teeth.

The teacher stood completely frozen behind her desk, utterly baffled by the bizarre interaction unfolding in her classroom.

Tyler was practically dragged out into the school hallway, casting one final glare of sheer hatred over his shoulder.

I calmly knelt on the padded floor and began picking up the scattered notebooks Tyler had kicked away.

Emma rushed over to help me, her hands trembling as she handed me my favorite pencil case.

"Lily, what just happened?" Emma whispered nervously.

"I honestly have no idea," I replied, slipping the small martial arts patch deep into my front pocket.

When the final school bell finally rang, I walked out of the building with a strange sense of impending dread.

My father, Marcus Carter, was waiting for me near the crosswalk in his battered vintage truck.

He was a quiet, rugged man who spent his days repairing boat engines and his nights teaching me ancient combat techniques.

I climbed into the passenger seat and immediately pulled the patch out of my pocket.

"A boy tried to bully Emma today, and his dad saw this patch fall out of my bag," I explained quietly.

My father’s grip on the steering wheel instantly tightened until his knuckles turned completely white.

"What did the man say, Lily?" he asked, his voice suddenly dropping to a dangerous, icy register.

"He asked Tyler if he had any idea who my father was," I answered honestly.

My dad did not say another word as he aggressively slammed his foot onto the gas pedal.

We sped through the city streets, running two red lights before swerving into our quiet suburban driveway.

"Go straight to the basement safe room and lock the heavy steel door behind you," he commanded sharply.

Before I could even unbuckle my seatbelt, the deafening roar of high-powered engines echoed down our street.

Three massive, heavily armored black SUVs violently smashed through our wooden front gate, completely surrounding our truck.
