Chapter 5 - The Syndicate's Heir

I froze completely, my eyes locked on the terrifying weapon pressed against my father's bleeding temple.
Silas chuckled warmly, slowly lowering his weapon but keeping his firm grip on my father's heavy chains.
"You possess extraordinary talent for someone so incredibly young, Lily," Silas called down from the balcony.
"Your father clearly trained you well, even while he was actively betraying the very empire he helped build."
I looked up at my father, who was shaking his head desperately, silently begging me to run away.
"Marcus Carter was not just a humble boat mechanic," Silas announced loudly to the entire warehouse.
"He was the single deadliest assassin this Syndicate ever produced, and the rightful leader of our entire organization."
I stared at my dad in absolute disbelief, struggling to connect the gentle man who made me pancakes with a legendary killer.
"He abandoned his rightful throne ten years ago to hide you from us," Silas continued with a venomous sneer.
"He knew that the bloodline rules of the Syndicate dictate that the firstborn child must inherit the leadership."
Silas leaned dangerously over the railing, his cold eyes completely devoid of any human empathy.
"I have run this empire in his absence, but the high council demands a legitimate bloodline heir to maintain order."
"If you fight in the underground arena tonight and officially prove your worth, I will let Marcus and your little friend go free."
"If you refuse, I will execute them both right here and simply force you to comply anyway."
I looked back at Emma, who was weeping silently in her cage, and then up at my battered father.
I had absolutely no choice left if I wanted to save the people I loved.
"I accept your challenge," I yelled firmly, raising my chin in absolute defiance.
Silas smiled wickedly, pressing a small remote control hidden inside his tailored suit jacket.
A massive set of rusted steel doors at the far end of the warehouse began to grind slowly open.
The deafening roar of a bloodthirsty crowd echoed from the dark underground fighting pit beyond the doors.
"Your first opponent has been waiting a very long time for a challenge," Silas announced happily.

A gargantuan, heavily scarred man covered in terrifying tattoos stepped slowly out of the shadows.
He was a fully grown, lethal adult fighter known in the underground world simply as The Viper.
