Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Ally

I screamed in horror as the ancient paper burned into useless black ash.
Grant dropped the burning remnants onto the marble floor and crushed them beneath his expensive Italian shoes.
He looked at me with a sickeningly triumphant smile on his face.
He arrogantly told me that a good businessman always covers his blind spots.
He had paid millions to hack Julian’s private servers to learn about the Ironclad Trust.
Grant laughed and told me it was officially over, because without the original document, I had absolutely nothing.
I fell to my knees on the cold marble floor, the fight completely draining out of my broken body.
The deadline officially passed, and I had failed to protect my children’s legacy.
Suddenly, the heavy sound of slow, mocking applause echoed through the quiet bank lobby.
Julian walked calmly through the revolving doors, brushing the rain off his dark trench coat.
He stepped directly over the pile of ashes and looked at Grant with pure disgust.
Julian asked Grant if he seriously believed a billionaire oil tycoon would leave his only safety net on a single piece of flammable paper.
Grant's smug smile instantly vanished as confusion washed over his face.
Julian reached inside his coat and pulled out a solid metal lockbox.
He pressed his thumb against a biometric scanner, and the box clicked open.
Inside rested the true, legally binding master copy of the Ironclad Trust, printed on fire-resistant polymer paper.
Julian explained that the document Grant just burned was a carefully planted decoy to waste his time.
The federal notary quickly stamped the real document as I signed my name with a shaking, bloody hand.
The digital clock in the bank lobby chimed, signaling the exact moment the deadline hit.
I had beaten the countdown by less than ten seconds.
Grant's face turned pale with absolute fury as he lunged aggressively toward me.
Before he could take two steps, his customized platinum smartphone began ringing violently in his pocket.

He answered it, and I watched the color drain completely from his skin as he listened to the voice on the other end.
His entire board of directors was calling to inform him that his accounts were frozen, and he had just been legally ousted from his own company.
