Chapter 3 - The Dead Man's Clause

Security guards grabbed my arms and dragged me away from the nursery window.

I fought them with every ounce of strength I had left in my exhausted body.

They forced me back into my hospital bed and threatened to sedate me if I moved again.

I lay in the dark room, silently crying as the horrific reality of my situation set in.

Grant had planned this entire betrayal perfectly.

He waited until I was unconscious and dying to legally erase my entire existence.

Suddenly, the door to my room clicked open, and a tall man in a dark trench coat slipped inside.

He was not a doctor, and he definitely was not a security guard.

He handed me a thick, sealed envelope bearing a wax crest I had not seen in a decade.

It was the official seal of my late grandfather, a ruthless oil tycoon who had built a billion-dollar empire.

The mysterious man introduced himself as Julian Vance, the executor of my grandfather's shadow estate.

I tore the envelope open with trembling fingers and pulled out a faded legal document.

Julian explained that my grandfather never trusted Grant and had secretly inserted a poison pill into our marriage contract.

It was a hidden protection clause known as the Ironclad Trust.

If Grant ever initiated a divorce while I was medically incapacitated, he automatically forfeited eighty percent of his corporate shares to my children.

Furthermore, the clause granted me total, irrevocable control over those shares.

I looked up at Julian, a spark of fierce hope igniting in my chest.

I asked him what I needed to do to activate this financial safeguard immediately.

Julian’s face grew incredibly grim as he pointed to the bottom of the document.

He told me the clause required my physical signature in the presence of a federal notary within forty-eight hours of the divorce filing.

I glanced at the digital clock on the hospital wall in sheer panic.

The forty-eight hour deadline was set to expire in exactly forty minutes.

Before I could even swing my legs out of the bed, the door flew open again.

Two police officers walked into the room, holding handcuffs and a psychiatric commitment order signed by Grant.
