Chapter 2 - The Erased Mother

The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital room suddenly felt blinding.
I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain ripped through my abdomen from the surgery.
I demanded to know who had taken medical custody of my three babies.
The hospital administrator looked down at her clipboard with genuine pity in her eyes.
She told me that a woman named Chloe Sterling was now listed as their primary guardian.
My blood turned to absolute ice in my veins.
Chloe was Grant’s executive assistant, a woman I had suspected he was sleeping with for months.
I reached for the phone beside my bed and dialed my personal attorney.
I needed to file an emergency injunction to stop Grant from stealing my children.
The phone rang three times before a paralegal answered with a shaky voice.
She informed me that my lawyer had abruptly retired yesterday after receiving a massive anonymous payout.
I slammed the phone down and ripped the IV monitor from my hand.
Alarms began blaring in the small room as blood dripped onto the white sheets.
I did not care about the pain or the nurses rushing through the door.
I pushed past them and stumbled down the hallway toward the neonatal intensive care unit.
I pressed my hands against the large glass window of the nursery.
Inside, I saw Grant standing next to the incubators with a bright, genuine smile on his face.
Chloe was standing right beside him, delicately touching the glass that separated her from my babies.
I pounded my fists against the heavy window and screamed my husband's name.
Grant turned around, saw my bleeding, desperate state, and simply smirked.
He pulled a folded piece of paper from his suit jacket and pressed it against the glass.

It was a restraining order signed by a judge just an hour ago.
The document legally barred me from coming within five hundred feet of my own children.
