Chapter 1 - The Stroke of a Pen

The smell of antiseptic filled the hospital corridor.
Behind the ICU doors, a team of doctors worked desperately to save my life.
Just hours earlier, I had delivered triplets through an emergency C-section.
Three tiny babies survived the traumatic birth.
I almost did not.
My heart had stopped beating on the operating table.
Machines breathed for me while doctors were not sure I would ever wake up.
But while medical staff rushed to save the mother of his children, my husband was focused on something else entirely.
Grant Holloway stood in the hallway wearing a tailored designer suit that cost more than most families earned in a month.
There were no tears on his face.
There was no panic or concern in his eyes.
There was only cold, calculated impatience.
A corporate lawyer handed him a thick stack of legal papers.
The attorney asked carefully if Grant was sure he wanted to proceed while his wife was in critical condition.
Grant barely looked up from the documents.
He signed every single page with a sleek gold pen.
He did it as casually as if he were approving a routine business expense.
Then he asked a question that left everyone speechless.
He wanted to know exactly how quickly the divorce could be finalized.
The lawyer hesitated while the nearby doctors exchanged stunned looks.
A moment later, the ICU doors opened and a physician stepped into the hallway.
She told Grant that I was alive but still critical, and they needed his authorization for additional treatment.
Grant snapped the legal folder shut and looked her dead in the eye.
He told the exhausted doctor that he was no longer my husband.
He checked his expensive watch and told her to update the hospital records immediately.
The entire hallway fell completely silent.
Grant walked away without asking about my condition or our newborn babies.
On his way to the elevator, he texted his mistress, Chloe, to confirm the deed was done.
Three days later, I finally opened my heavy eyes.
A hospital administrator quietly pulled me aside to explain my new reality.
My premium medical insurance coverage had completely vanished.
I stared at her in absolute disbelief as she delivered the final blow.

She told me that I was no longer listed as the immediate family for my own triplets.
Someone had already transferred their medical custody to another woman.
