Chapter 7 - The Raging Inferno

Caleb drove his truck through the dark city streets at terrifying speeds.
He pulled into his quiet suburban neighborhood and slammed the brakes in front of his townhouse.
The front door of his home was wide open, swinging gently in the cold night breeze.
The overwhelming, toxic scent of gasoline drifted heavily out onto the front porch.
Caleb pulled a heavy flashlight from his glove compartment and stepped cautiously inside.
The beautiful hardwood floors were completely soaked in highly flammable fuel.
Standing in the center of the living room was Lorraine's younger brother, Uncle Richard.
Richard was holding a silver lighter and a red plastic gas can.
"Lorraine called me from the back of the police car," Richard sneered, flicking the lighter open.
"She told me to burn this place to the ground to erase all the evidence of her visit."
"You are going to prison right alongside her, Richard," Caleb warned, gripping the heavy flashlight.
"Not if the evidence goes up in smoke," Richard laughed, tossing the open flame onto the soaked rug.
The living room instantly erupted into a massive wall of blinding orange fire.
The sheer heat pushed Caleb backward through the front doorway.
He watched in horror as his beautiful home was consumed by the raging inferno.
The indoor security cameras were melting into unrecognizable plastic puddles inside the blaze.

Richard sprinted out through the back patio door and disappeared into the dark woods.
Caleb realized the only proof of his mother's attempted murder was currently burning to ashes.
