Chapter 4 - The Corrupt Detective

Caleb slowly turned his head toward the back of the wrecked van.
A local police detective was standing in the garage, pointing a service weapon directly at Caleb's chest.
"Step away from the infant and put your hands on your head," the detective ordered sharply.
Caleb recognized the officer immediately as Detective Hayes, a man who played golf with Lorraine every Sunday.
"My mother paid this crew to kidnap my newborn son," Caleb pleaded, raising his hands slowly.
Lorraine stepped out from the shadows of the concrete pillar, completely uninjured.
"My son is suffering from a violent psychotic break," Lorraine told the detective with fake tears in her eyes.
"He just assaulted this innocent medical transport team in a blind rage."
Detective Hayes holstered his weapon and pulled out a heavy pair of steel handcuffs.
"Turn around and put your hands behind your back, Caleb," the detective commanded.
"You cannot be serious right now," Caleb argued, stepping protectively in front of the incubator.
"She forged medical documents and stole a baby from the intensive care unit."
"I saw the power of attorney papers myself, and they are perfectly legal," Hayes lied without blinking.
Caleb realized the corruption went much deeper than a single paid paramedic.
His mother had purchased the loyalty of the local police department to execute her plan.
The detective forcefully grabbed Caleb's shoulder and slammed him against the side of the van.
