Chapter 1 - The Evidence Pouch

Caleb stared at the clear plastic bag in the hands of the maternity nurse.

The glowing screen of his wife’s phone illuminated his bloodstained fingers.

He read the vicious text message from his mother over and over again.

Lorraine had deliberately manipulated the situation to make Hannah look like a cheating liar.

She had actively prevented a dying pregnant woman from receiving emergency medical care.

A sickening wave of guilt crashed over his exhausted body.

He remembered the shameful seconds he had spent doubting the woman he loved.

His mother had spent years planting those toxic seeds of suspicion in his mind.

He wanted to scream, but the heavy surgical doors suddenly swung open.

Dr. Elias Morgan stepped into the hallway wearing dark green scrubs covered in fresh blood.

Caleb dropped the evidence pouch and sprinted toward the exhausted physician.

"Is my wife alive?" Caleb demanded, his voice cracking with pure terror.

Dr. Morgan pulled off his surgical mask and let out a long, heavy sigh.

"Hannah survived the surgery, but she lost an incredible amount of blood."

"We had to perform an emergency cesarean section to save her life."

Caleb fell to his knees on the cold linoleum floor in sheer relief.

"Where is my baby?" Caleb asked, tears finally spilling down his face.

The doctor’s expression instantly shifted from exhaustion to absolute confusion.

"Your mother was just here in the surgical recovery wing."
