Chapter 3 - The Hospital Basement

Caleb ended the call and sprinted toward the main elevator bank.
He knew the private transport ambulances always loaded through the underground freight garage.
He bypassed the slow elevators and threw open the door to the emergency stairwell.
He leaped down the concrete steps three at a time, risking his own neck in the descent.
When he burst into the dimly lit basement garage, a black transport van was idling near the exit.
Lorraine was standing by the open back doors, handing a thick envelope of cash to a corrupt paramedic.
A portable infant incubator was already strapped securely into the back of the vehicle.
"Stop right there!" Caleb shouted, sprinting across the concrete floor.
The corrupt paramedic panicked, dropping the cash and jumping into the driver's seat.
The van's tires screeched loudly as the driver floored the accelerator to escape.
Caleb dove forward with reckless abandon and grabbed the metal handle of the open back door.
He was dragged violently across the rough pavement for several agonizing seconds.
With a primal scream, he hauled his upper body into the moving vehicle.
He kicked the driver squarely in the back of the head, sending the van crashing into a concrete pillar.
The airbags deployed with a deafening blast of white smoke.
Caleb ignored his bleeding arms and scrambled toward the portable incubator.
